In 2015, the Ulyanovsk region was declared the main venue of the celebrations associated with the 250th anniversary of the writer’s birth. A great job on promoting the name and the creative heritage of Nikolay Karamzin in the region, especially among the younger generation, is supported by the Governor Sergey Morozov.
The head of the region Sergey Morozov received the letter of confirmation from the executive secretary of the Russian Committee for UNESCO Grigory Ordzhonikidze.
The foundation “Ulyanovsk – Capital of Culture” in partnership with Karamzin’s support of cultural and historical heritage foundation received financial support in the amount of 1,5 million rubles for the organization of the event.
The videoconference with participation of the representatives of the two cities was held on the Nikolay Karamzin Memorial Day at the beginning of June. The sides have agreed on cooperation among the universities, literary museums, as well as the possibility of implementing joint projects in the framework of the programme “UNESCO Creative Cities Network”. In particular, the representatives of the Uruguay State University of Literature professors have expressed their interest in opening of the Chair of Russian Literature in Uruguay.
At the end of last year Ulyanovsk became the first and only UNESCO City of Literature. This event is no less important than the choice of our country as the venue for major sporting or political world-class event. The Ulyanovsk region has prepared an application and took part in this prestigious international contest on the initiative of the Governor of the Ulyanovsk region Sergey Morozov.
From 1 to 14 February 2016, the region hosted the International Film Festival "Foreign Cinema Days", which became part of the cultural programme of the XXXVI Bandy World Championship. During these days citizens of Ulyanovsk and guests of the city could watch the films created in the countries participating in the Championship.
The opening ceremony of the International exhibition "AccessAbility" was held on February 2. It was organized within the framework of the cultural programme of the XXXVI Bandy World Championship by the Swedish Embassy in Russia, the Swedish Institute, the Foundation "Ulyanovsk – Capital of Culture" and the Museum of Local Lore named after I.A. Goncharov.

Since January 2016 "Ulyanovsk – Capital of Culture" Foundation as a development institution has been actively working on the implementation of the project "Ulyanovsk – UNESCO City of Literature".
